Antioxidants and Free Radicals

There are several ways we can keep our skin looking youthful and healthy.  Antioxidants play a key role in protecting our skin.  Antioxidants work by neutralizing the free radicals that constantly attack our skin.  Free radicals are unstable molecules.  Free radicals stabilize themselves by taking from our skin’s natural proteins.  This causes a chain reaction of events to occur leaving behind a damaged skin structure, damaged DNA (aging and illness), and a weakened cell structure.   This is why we need antioxidants to help protect our skin.

Avocados are a great example of how this reaction works.  When you cut open an avocado and leave it out for a couple of hours, it will begin to turn brown.  But if you squeeze some lemon juice on it, it will stay fresh and not lose color.  Why is this?  Lemon juice has a ton of vitamin C, and vitamin C is an excellent antioxidant, it protects the avocado from the free radicals.

Vitamin C is one of the best antioxidants we can use to protect our skin.  There are several great products out there that contain the correct type of vitamin C for our skin.  Our favorite products are Skinceutical’s C E Ferulic and Phloretin CF, as well as SkinMedica’s TNS products.
